The time has come for you to start finding gigs but you don’t know where to turn. Maybe you need to get back to the basics, or find a simple idea that can help you land a few extra gigs this year. Hopeully this will help.

1. Get some business cards. Put them all over your town and give them to whoever you can. You will be suprised how an anonymous person can lead to a gig but make sure your business cards stand out. It’s a marketing tool and people will look at it as an extension of you.

2. Always invite promoters, club owners, bookers, prospects, and past clients to your gigs. Creating an email list or sending a text message for this purpose is better than posting on your social network page but they both work.

3. Make sure someone is able to answer your phone during normal business hours and in most cases in the early evening too. There a ton of promoters and bookers who have a daytime job and handle their promotion stuff after work. A simple answering machine is suffice but the time it takes for you to get back to them could cost you a gig. If you have a seperate business line, forward the calls to your mobile phone when you are away.

4. Have a 5-10 minute live set posted on Youtube. Go to tinyurl.com to shorten the web address and include it on your business cards, letterhead, postcards, brochures, email signature, etc. Potential buyers will want this footage to be recorded before a live audience. The more positive reaction from the crowd, the better.

5. Study the art of “closing the deal.” Know the buzzwords that signal interest on the part of the client. Find a few closing techniques that you are comfortable with. Then, go online and see if you can discover something about the buyers interests and values, and customize each client’s call to hit their hot buttons.

1. Print postcards of the band or artist. Include website, contact email and phone number. Send to bars, clubs, promoters, etc. in your area.

2. Make sure you have priced your talents competitively. Know your market. Are you not getting gigs because your price is so low and there is no perceived value?

3. Call people who have booked you or have shown an interest in the past. Find out if there are any upcoming shows you can lock in with them. The key is to getting work is to contact your past paying gigs. If you did some free work, take the gig this time only if they are willing to pay.

4. Read the local papers. Find out what’s happening in your area. Find the contact person for the event. Pick up the phone and try to get a slot to perform. This includes company parties, wedding receptions, night club birthday parties, etc.

5. Promote your website on Facebook, Myspace, and other social networks. Add a comment to a local online article and include your website in the profile or your comment.

Got any more ideas on how to get more gigs? Send them in, not only will we post them after our official launch on March 1, 2011 but we will credit you and your website.
